Makar sankranti

“Wishing you and your family lots of happiness and sweet surprises this Makar Sankranti!” “Worship the Lord Sun, and fly the kite and celebrate the day, as this is the season of harvest. Happy Makar Sankranti to all.” “Wish You and Your Family A Joyful, Healthy, Prosperous and Happiest Makar Sankranti Ahead..!”

Significance. Every year Makar Sankranti is celebrated in the month of January. This festival is dedicated to the Hindu religious sun god Surya. This significance of Surya is traceable to the Vedic texts, particularly the Gayatri Mantra, a sacred hymn of Hinduism found in its scripture named the Rigveda.

In addition to worshipping Lord Sun through Surya Puja and Lord Shani, Gayatri Mantra and Surya Mantra are also recited. The majority of people exchange and donate "Jaggery" (molasses) and "Til" (sesame seeds) on the day of the Makar Sankranti celebration.

One of the most important features of this festival is to wear the color black that is otherwise thought of as taboo to wear on auspicious occasions. Since Makar Sankranti marks the last day of the solstice, it is thought to be the coldest day of winter.
