Guru Purnima 2023

Guru Purnima 2023: History and significance

After spending five weeks under the Bodhi tree, Buddha left Bodhgaya and travelled to Sarnath, Uttar Pradesh. This is why Gautam Buddha's followers celebrate this day as Guru Purnima to worship him and the Ashadha Purnima Tithi is significant for Buddhists.

Guru Purnima Puja & Yajna on the occasion of Guru Purnima is performed to seek the divine blessings of gurus who remove darkness of ignorance and light up the Path of life. Benefit of this puja: Paying tributes to our beloved Guru.

It is not a nationwide public holiday in countries such as Australia, Canada, the United Kingdom, and the United States but some cities may hold large celebrations for the occasion.
What is the difference between Teacher's Day and Guru Purnima?
In India the birthday of the second president Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan, 5 September, is celebrated as Teachers' Day since 1962, while Guru Purnima has been traditionally observed as a day to worship teachers/gurus by Hindus.
In India guru Purnima is celebrated in school, colleges, temples and monastery. On that occasion people does worship of guru vyas. And after that the students take blessings of their teacher by touching their feets. The relation between teacher and student has a great importance from ancient time.
