An Indian Tamil-language mafia drama movie from 1991 is titled Thalapathi (also known as Commander)

Mani Ratnam produced, wrote, and directed the film with G. Venkateswaran.
Rajinikanth, Mammootty, Arvind Swamy, Jaishankar, Amrish Puri, Srividya, Bhanupriya, Shobana, and Geetha all play major parts in the movie.
It tells the story of a brave slum resident who befriends a strong don and the efforts of the district collector to stop them.
The friendship between Karna and Duryodhana, two figures from the Hindu epic Mahabharata, serves as the foundation for Thalapathi's plot.
In their final joint effort, composer Ilaiyaraaja and poet Vaali collaborated on the soundtrack and score of the movie.
Santosh Sivan handled the cinematography, and Suresh Urs was the editor.
State of Karnataka was where most of the filming took place.
With a  rs 30000000 Thalapathi was the most expensive South Indian movie at the time of its release.

On November 5, 1991, Diwali Day, Thalapathi was released. It was a huge success both critically and financially, and it received numerous accolades, including two Filmfare Awards South: Best Director - Tamil (Ratnam) and Best Music Director - Tamil (Ilaiyaraaja), as well as two Cinema Express Awards: Best Actor - Tamil (Rajinikanth) and Best Character Actress (Srividya).
The Kannada version was redone as Annavru (2003). 

 

Plot
On the Bhogi festival day, fourteen-year-old Kalyani gives birth to a son on her own and abandons him inside a speeding goods train out of fear of social criticism and her immaturity.
A resident of a slum finds the infant, brings him home, gives him the name Surya, and raises him.
The child develops into a person who is intolerant of injustice, particularly when it affects the poor, and who questions why his biological mother abandoned him.
The yellow shawl that his mother had wrapped him in is the only thing she left behind.
Powerful mobster Devaraj, who is gentle yet is feared by others, uses force to avenge injustice.
An assistant to Devaraj named Ramana is attacked by Surya and killed.
The police brutally torture Surya after he is jailed for murder, but Devaraj frees him after realising Ramana had committed a crime.  and understands Surya's case was legitimate.
Devaraj and Surya, who have similar ideologies, start to comprehend one another.
Surya is referred to by Devaraj as his best friend and Thalapathi (commander).

Arjun, the new district collector for the city, wants to put a legal end to violence.
He is the second child of Kalyani, a doctor nowadays.
She married Krishnamoorthy after leaving her firstborn child, Surya, behind.
Although Kalyani never told Arjun about the adversity she went through as an adolescent, she is continuously troubled by memories of her long-lost firstborn.
A Brahmin girl named Subbulaxmi is courting Surya in the meantime because she is enamoured with his clear character.
Surya's evaluation to Devaraj inspires local folks in the locality to appreciate them both. 

In his fight against organised crime, Arjun unsuccessfully targets Devaraj and Surya. Meanwhile, Padma, Ramana's widow, makes Surya feel guilty for killing Ramana. Understanding Padma's pain, Devaraj shelters her and her child. However, Padma confesses she is constantly troubled by the dishonourable men surrounding her. Devaraj, considering Padma and her daughter's safety and Surya's future, asks them to marry each other. Guilt-ridden, Surya marries Padma and eventually wins her child's affection. Later, at a medical camp, Kalyani meets Padma and her daughter, along with the shawl in which she wrapped Surya. After asking about the day he was found, Kalyani and Krishnamoorthy discover Surya is Kalyani's long-lost son during a suspect identification. Krishnamoorthy secretly meets Surya and reveals the truth of his origin to him. Surya asks Krishnamoorthy to promise not to let his mother know of Surya's identity because it would hurt her to know her son has grown to be a vigilante.
